The Brain Barometer: A communication tool for understanding how trauma can influence our brains and behaviors

In this workshop, we will review my book “The Brain Fit Tool Kit”, and then focus on the “Brain Barometer”, a tool that can help you in your daily practice. This tool is a result of connections that I have made through my own personal research and bridges the “Mind Up” and “Zones of Regulation” programs. This is a simple yet effective compassion and communication tool to help students make connections between their brains (thoughts) and bodies (behaviors), to help parents understand how their actions and behaviors can impact their child’s brain barometers, and to help teachers understand how a student’s brain barometer can impact their ability to learn.  Having a shared understanding that we are holistically affected by trauma and unable to learn effectively if our brains and bodies are not yet in the “green zone” is imperative. Our students first need attachment, a sense of belonging, and a feeling of calm before they can effectively learn. We will also learn how this tool can be an effective way to teach awareness about how we self manage our brain barometers in unsafe ways such as using drugs, alcohol, video games, and social media and safe ways such as meditation, spending time with friends, or exercise.

I am a passionate learner, educator, and school counsellor who has been working for and with the school system for over 20 years. I am the author of the “Brain Fit Tool Kit” and creator of “The Brain Fit Super Powers” school program. I aspire to help children, teachers, and parents connect and attach using a common language that builds self-awareness, empathy, and compassion for self and others. I teach, and believe, that when we are mindfully aware of our "brain barometers" we can positively change our own world and the worlds of others around us.
